Since the Torch and Subby cross over so much in these stories, might it make sense to have a Marvel Mystery Masterworks featuring the Torch and Subby. And then a separate Human Torch Masterworks and Sub-Mariner Masterworks reprinting stories from their solo books and elsewhere?

I've read just enough Sub-Mariner & Human Torch stories from the 40's to feel that the quality of the art & writing on Sub-Mariner was about 10 times better than on the Human Torch. For this reason, I'd love to see a Masterworks series containing EVERY Sub-Mariner story from every magazine he appeared in... and don't feel the need to worry about the Human Torch at all! (But that's just me... )

Golden Age Bill Everett Submariner was top form comic book entertainment. It would be wonderful to see it archived (or masterworked, I guess). It is so good though, that interested parties should not wait. Get in touch with Microcolor and order the microfische!

That many! Marvel needs to get started in the next 3 or 4 years if we are going to see this completed in our lifetimes.

More material than I'd thought.
Was there a Timely superhero title that he didn't appear in?

Bring 'em on--I'm ready.

In particular, I hadn't realized that there was more than a whole volume's worth of the 1950s material, which is Everett at one of his peaks. Separated out, that would be a nice, and only slightly oversized, done-in-one.

I don't think he appeared in Millie the Model or Gay Comics, but the GCD doesn't have complete indices for those titles, so who knows?

Young Men/Men's Adventures seems like a prime candidate to do as an anthology Masterwork. (I knew I had left something out of that anthology thread...)

I can just see Marvel publishing the "Gay Comics Masterworks", and having one half of the comic audience boycott it without looking at a single page, while the other half buying it, but expecting something else entirely, and being bitterly disappointed.

I don't think we'll ever see such a book.

That Prince Namor is no disappointment, either.

Over the last couple years, I've spent far too much of my "spare time" (gee, what's that?) updating & upgrading my own comics indexes, now that I have a computer and can do "cut & paste". This SUB-MARINER list is probably the 1st time a work of such EXCESSIVE obsession has really come in handy. (Thanks!)

I've been thinking about it for some time, but this month I finally decided I wanted to pull out a lot of my old comics and read them in chronological order. To help with this, I put together a list using "cut & paste" from my existing lists. Naturally, only stories I actually HAVE go onto this "reading" list.

Not surprisingly, right about now, about 95% of all the Golden Age SUB-MARINER stories I've never seen. And a few of the ones I do, I had no idea where they were from. UNTIL NOW! A lot of old reprints were in the back of "new" comics, or in misc. anthologies, making it a real chore, if not next-to-impossible to find the things WITHOUT having it listed WHERE the stories were reprinted.

Anyway, here's some of the "gems" I'm looking forward to re-reading over the next couple weeks:

MOTION PICTURE FUNNIES #1 -- "Sub-Mariner" (debut) -- GOLDEN AGE OF MARVEL COMICS / '97

MARVEL MYSTERY #7 -- "Sub-Mariner Attacks Manhattan" -- THE GREAT COMIC BOOK HEROES / '65

MARVEL MYSTERY #8 -- "To Capture The Sub-Mariner" -- GOLDEN AGE OF MARVEL COMICS / '97

MARVEL MYSTERY #17 -- "Fighting Side-By-Side" -- GOLDEN AGE OF MARVEL COMICS / '97

ALL-WINNERS #1 -- "The Torpedo Boat Terror" -- FLASHBACK #23 / '??

MARVEL MYSTERY #23 -- "The Case Of The Vanishing Convicts" -- MARVEL MYSTERY COMICS #1 / '99

HUMAN TORCH #5 -- "The Human Torch Battles The Sub-Mariner As The World Faces Destruction!" (60 pages!!) -- TIMELY COMICS PRESENTS THE HUMAN TORCH / '99

MARVEL MYSTERY #26 -- "The Sub-Mariner Smashes A Nazi Uprising" -- GOLDEN AGE OF MARVEL COMICS #2 / '99

MARVEL MYSTERY #27 -- "The Fox's Smuggling Racket" -- GOLDEN AGE OF MARVEL COMICS #2 / '99

MARVEL MYSTERY #42 -- "Terror Of The Boiling Seas" -- GOLDEN AGE OF MARVEL COMICS / '97

ALL-WINNERS #19 -- "The Crime Of The Ages!" (43 pages!) -- TIMELY PRESENTS: ALL-WINNERS / '99

YOUNG MEN #24 -- "Out Of The Past" -- GOLDEN AGE OF MARVEL COMICS /'97

YOUNG MEN #25 -- "The Shark People" -- GIANT-SIZE DEFENDERS #2 / '74

YOUNG MEN #26 -- "Captain America Turns Traitor!" (Subby cameo) -- GOLDEN AGE OF MARVEL COMICS / '97

SUB-MARINER #35 -- "The Dawn Of The Sub-Mariner" -- MARVEL SUPER-HEROES #15 / '68

SUB-MARINER #38 -- "The Sub-Mariner Strikes!" -- MARVEL SUPER-HEROES #12 / '68

SUB-MARINER #38 -- "The World Destroyers" -- GIANT-SIZE DEFENDERS #3 / '75

SUB-MARINER #42 -- "Invasion!!" -- marvel super-heroes #13 / '68

At the very least, MARVEL MYSTERY COMICS #1-10 desperately needs to be collected in one volume, as for Subby, it's virtually a single big "epic". Considering the HUNDREDS of Sub-Mariner stories that have come out of the early events in his career, it's SHAMEFULLY overdue for those stories to be reprinted so future generations can read the masterful works of Bill Everett, instead of having to "settle" for the inferior works of countless interchangeable creative teams who've followed in the decades since.

Question for Owen: Is this a project that Marvel is currently working on or is this merely a speculation?
